Chaos & Candles is a food, fashion, and lifestyle blog with subtle textures and a bright, fresh colour pallete. Article copy is set in the highly legible FF Meta Serif, with menus and logotype in Futura PT. Custom HTML, CSS and JavaScript were wrapped in Tumblr's templating tags for a simple, social backend. The design is fully responsive and all assets are optimized for high pixel density "retina" displays.
We worked closely with studio owner Doug Northcott to brand Amplitude Audio Production, drawing influence from Soviet era space propaganda. We anchored this single page site design with large background images, shot and processed specifically for Amplitude's website. Body type is the geometric sans-serif Futura PT, with a condensed gothic sans-serif and heavy icons used for navigation. At launch we kickstarted a Facebook marketing campaign that grew Amplitude's fan page from 0 - 1400+ engaged users in 30 days.
Wedding photographer Curtis Moore approached Shedbot to fulfil a wishlist of upgrades to his website and blog. We made various social and usability enhancements to improve the feel and performance of the website and developed a custom Pinterest plugin that dynamically creates a "Pin This Photo" link below each photo added to the blog.
Claywork approached Shedbot to build a portfolio site for their young landscape design and construction company. We used subtle textures and transparency throughout the site, and designed custom JavaScript animations to elegantly display case studies on the home page. We also designed a Photoshop template that allows Claywork staff to format and export images that form a fully semantic HTML/CSS collage for each case study.
For Phoenix Framing we designed a single-page animated scrolling website with legible, high contrast copy and low data density. Intentionally skewed image frames and the incorporation of real-world objects were conscious design decisions tailored to a demographic more comfortable with a pen and paper than a computer or smartphone.
We worked closely with Vancouver home staging company Room 4 Design to design and a develop an elegant, timeless website to showcase their home staging and redesign services. The website uses a neutral colour palette with subtle texture and depth that allows their portfolio to shine.
We redesigned Hoist's website to coincide with the release of their most recent album, The Professional Life Characters. Drafts for the album artwork featured hand-drawn illustrations of spacemen, pigs, stars, Elvis, and various other characters that we digitally scanned and brought into Photoshop to cut up and use in the website design. It was a lot of fun.
As a kid I took apart everything I could get my hands on, studying the internals of electronics and gadgets to see what could be built from their components. In 2nd grade I built a bedroom alarm system from an old bike siren and some reed switches, and in 4th grade I built multi-zone audio control into my bunk bed.
The desire to build for the web is a continuation of my childhood curiosity to learn and create. Building in a rapidly evolving medium keeps us on our toes, but designing for the growing ways that people interact with technology is deeply gratifying. Feedback is instant, engagement is measurable, and results can be amplified through iterative process.
